The Basics:

Individual Defensive Skills:

o  1v0

o  1v1

Focus:

Movement, tackling, focused intensity, never quit, Pressure vs. Tackle, how to pressure, how to tackle. The importance of effort and positioning, channeling, confidence – time is on the defenses side.

Many of these drills can be seen DVD’s such as:

Skills Taught/ Themes (8):

1. "Everyone plays defense when we don't have the ball"

o    Aggressive, never quit attitude, focus and teamwork is everything.

2. "Fast, slow, sideways, low": 1v0

o    Fast: arrive before or as the ball arrives

o    Slow: slow down approx. 8-10' from the attacker

o    Sideways: proper stance, "channeling"

o    Low: good defensive stance, light on your feet, relaxed, work on 'hip flip', flexibility and agility

3.  "Pressure!": 1v1

o    We want the attackers head down and worried about controlling the ball. We don't want to give them time to see the field or take a quality shot.

o    We pressure the ball when we have support behind us and the attacker isn't too far away.

o    "Pressure does not mean tackle" (see #4)

o    Facing attacker pressure approx. 5-8' away. With attackers back to you pressure approx. 2-3' away, tight enough that you can touch them. Don't let attackers turn if their back is too you, play tight.

4.  When to Tackle / "First touch, bad touch": 1v1

o    First touch: Tackle just as the opponent receives the ball. Stress the importance of being fast to the ball. Better yet, steal the ball before it even gets to the attacker "first to the ball!"

o    Bad touch: Tackle if your opponent misplays the ball or the ball is allowed to get too far in front of them. If your opponent isn't that good at controlling the ball you can be even more aggressive.

o    Be patient: Time is on our side, not theirs. No matter how good someone is everyone always makes a mistake. Wait for the mistake. Just 'standing someone up' so they aren't pressing forward with the attack is a win as it allows you're entire team to get back on defense.

5.  How to Tackle: 1v1

o   "Pace, pace - shut the door"

o    "Block - strip"

o    Role of first defender, knock ball out/away, role of second defender - usually the one who actually gets the ball.

o    Locking them up 1v1

o    "Running through the ball". Great example of this is to watch how many balls UNC players block just as the other team is attempting to pass.

o    Attacker with back to defender - toe poke

o    How to play attackers coming at you at speed - ""no charging", and "no bull fighting". Hold your ground and let them come to you, channel away from goal.

6.   Channeling ("Shepherding"): 1v1

o    How to channel: "Inside - Goal Side"

o    Why we channel: away from our goal or in some circumstances toward another defender - exceptions to this rule (forwards)

o    Where to channel:

      -  Fullbacks: away from our goal and toward the

         sideline.

      -  Midfielders: toward another defender or the

         sideline.

      -  Forwards: toward the center and into traffic.

Most fullbacks are trained to take it to the

sideline. Take them out of their comfort zone

and force them handle the ball. If they lose it

in front of their goal we can take a shot

almost immediately. Rush "run through" all

keeper and fullback passes and attempt to

         block the ball.

7.  Playing through balls: 1v1

o    Teaching the fullbacks to "side on" and then "drop". The importance of speed on the back line especially at the higher levels of play.

o    Various moves to quickly control the ball under pressure and while at speed and then play it back the other way: Toe stop, drag-pull-back, outside of foot cuts, hooks/cuts.

o    Playing flighted balls, winning balls out of the air: headers, chest, thigh, inside of foot.

8.  Transitioning: 1v1

o    Already starting to introduce defenders to an immediate quick transition back the other way once the ball is won.
