Coaches Corner

The Basics:

Dribbling:

o  1v0

o  1v1 facing defender

o  1v1 back to defender

Focus:

Simple controlled dribbling with ball kept close, speed dribbling with ball pushed further away. Cuts, hooks, feints and cuts, drag-pull-backs, heel cut backs, stop-and-starts. ‘Trick’ moves (e.g. Maradona) can be taught if there’s time to increase a players confidence. For the most part only the basic and most effective moves are taught. Coerver methods and drills used extensively. Players encouraged to learn the drag-pull-back, 1-2 cut moves and 1 stop and start move well. Moves should become automatic and instinctive for players.

Many of these drills can be seen DVD’s such as:

o    Coerver

o    "All the Right Moves"

Moves Taught (10):

1. Basic Dribble:

o     Controlled dribble

o     Speed dribble

2. Drag back moves:

o     Toe stop

o     Drag pull-back

o     Pull V’s: drag pull-back to a push forward with same foot (could be inside or outside of the foot used to push forward)

3.  Stop and Start Moves:

o     Dribble forward, toe stop then with opposite foot punch the ball forward. Fast-stop-go movement to get defenders working backwards, then freeze them, then blow by them.

4.  Chops/Hooks:

o    Step over and chop back w/inside of foot – no feint

5.  Cuts:

o    No feint. Dribble one way and cut back with outside of opposite foot.

o    Step over (outside to inside) and then cut outside with same foot – add shimmy that turns hips in direction of the step over fake before cutting back.

o    Step over and then cut outside with opposite foot – add shimmy.

6.    Cruyff Turn (“Annie” turn) – misdirection shielding move:

o    Step over and then cut back with inside of opposite heel (step over ball)

7.  Scissor Move:

8.  Swivel - misdirection shielding move:

o    Step over ball, back now to defender and use outside of foot to quickly push the ball away.

9.  Twist off Move:

o    Push ball ahead, reach past ball and cut back while turning with the same foot. Almost a drag pull back with a spin. Accelerate away in the direction you came. Basically a ground version of the Maradona. Good for shielding the ball.

10.  Combination Moves - Combining various moves together:

Teaching Progression (12):

     1.   Open field: Dribbling with move every 10 seconds or

so. Coach calls out move and teaches as needed.

     2.   Triangle Cone Course: 1v0 set-up a triangle cone

course. Player dribbles up to the first cone, perform

cut move and pushing the ball to the 2nd cone. At 2nd

cone perform cut again and dribble back to starting

point. Turn players around and run the course the

opposite way so the cuts are going the other

           direction.

    3.    Zig-zag Cone Course: 1v0 Set up the channel with

diagonal cones of different color. At those cones

perform your cut to the opposite cone on the

opposite channel. Channel cut course works both

directions of your cut move in one drill.

     4.   Two Flag ‘Cut’ Drill: 1v1 Side to side cutting back and

forth (similar to rec ‘flag’ drill), channel zigzag dribble

course or a dribble ‘obstacle’ course (e.g. Coerver

           obstacle course).

     5.   Facing Goal / Dribble-Cut-Shot: 1v0 Dribble out to

cone marker, make cut and then snap off the shot at

the rebound or pugg goal. Repeat cutting the other

way and shooting with your other foot.

     6.  Obstacle Course: 1v0 Set-up the obstacle course

where the players perform 1-2 cut moves, flick the

ball around a flag/cone and finish by chipping the ball

on the run over the rebound goal or flags to the

coach. Repeat running the drill the other way.

     7.  Two Pugg Goal 1v1 Game: 1v1 Player with ball

dribbles out hard to center marker and then they can

cut either way. As soon as they pass the shot marking

line they can snap off a shot at the pugg goal.

Defender must pass shooting line as well. After shot is

made both players then race back to cross shooting

          line one at other goal.

     8.  Two Regulation Goals 1v1+K Game: 1v1 player with

ball dribbles out to cone marker in center of field, cuts

either way and once past the shooting line can snap

off a shot toward goal. If defender takes the ball they

can race back to the opposite goal and snap off a

shot. As soon as shot is taken and both players have

crossed the shooting line, they race back to cross the

other shooting line. Switch attackers and defenders

          after every turn.

     9.  1v1+k facing each other. Defender plays attacker if

          they win the ball.

    10.  1v1+k back to defender: Coach serves ball to attacker

whose back is to the goal with the defender racing up

from the goal to defend. Allows attacker to check to

ball, practice various turns (e.g. attacking turn),

dribble moves to turn and shoot etc.

    11. 1v1+k Through Ball: Coach hits a through ball, first to

the ball becomes the attacker. Attacker attempts to

gather in ball race to goal and snap off a shot.

Defender plays attacker if they win the ball.

    12. 1v1+k First Touch: Keeper or coach serves a

long/hard ball out. Players race to the ball (first to the

ball), control it (first touch) and race toward goal and

shoot. Defender players attacker if they win the ball.
